Histories with O Charley’s
In 1971, Mr. Charley Watkins opened O’Charley’s first restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee. The first O’Charley’s restaurant in Tennessee was located at 21 st Ave South, close to Vanderbilt University. From 1971 to 1984, Mr. Watkins was the owner and operator of this restaurant. He sold O’Charley’s restaurant in 1984 to David K. Wachtel. O’Charley’s, Inc. was established by Mr. Wachtel on January 19, 1984. It was a company that owned O’Charley’s. He opened many more locations and made the restaurant a chain. The chain was established in Lexington, Kentucky, Huntsville, Alabama, and Nashville, Tennessee, by 1987. The chain grew over the years and was eventually listed on the stock exchange in 1990.
The company began to see a decrease in sales and profits. As a result, the stock price began to fall. To improve the company’s performance, the executives evaluated the situation. In order to find a solution for sales improvement, Mr. Wachtel appointed Mr. Charles F. McWhorter Jr., senior vice president, and chief operating officer. McWhorter suggested a smaller menu. Additional changes to the menu and price reductions were also made. The company grew and was now a 37-unit restaurant chain by 1992.

Burns was appointed chief executive officer and co-chairman. The company was sued by the federal government for racial discrimination shortly after Mr. Wachtel resigned. Mr. Burns strongly denied this claim. In 1996, the company settled the case. McWhorter, the company’s former manager, resigned.
The chain grew nonetheless. The chain now has more than 106 units. There were more than 180 locations by 2002.
