History
Rocky Aoki founded Benihana’s in 1954. After graduating from college in Tokyo, Japan, he moved to the United States with the goal of opening his own restaurant. His story is similar to many successful businessmen. He started selling ice cream on the streets in Harlem while attending night school for management. His brilliant idea to serve his treats with brightly colored Japanese umbrellas made his little ice cream stand flourish. Soon enough, he was able to save enough to open his first restaurant.
In 1964, Aoki opened America’s first teppanyaki joint on New York City’s West 59th Street. It was named Benihana’s in honor of his parents’ coffee shop in Tokyo. His top-class chefs would create authentic Japanese cuisine before customers, sat at tables around a grill and surrounded by a rustic Japanese farmhouse. The highly skilled chefs’ theatrical knife skills amazed customers and earned him rave reviews from legendary critics. Within six months of opening, he had paid off his loans and made a profit.
Review
Benihana is still the market leader in teppanyaki, despite the fact that there are many other restaurants opening around the world. You can choose from authentic Japanese sake or a wide range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. There are many options for appetizers and a variety of specialty sushi rolls. You can also choose from the hibachi menu, where you can order everything from chicken to steak. If you are looking for a quieter and more romantic atmosphere, they also have a large lounge menu.
They are known for their exceptional knife skills and will give you a show you won’t forget. You will feel transported to Tokyo by the quaint and exotic ambience. It will also give you a relaxed, homey feeling so that you can enjoy your meal.
You get a lot for your money and the prices are very reasonable. An appetizer costs around $8, while the Teppan entrees cost around $20. They include soup, hot and cold teas, salads, hibachi shrimp appetizers, hibachi vegetable appetizers, and homemade dipping sauces. You also get a well-portioned entree. You can also choose from fish tacos or filet mignon among the lounge specials, which range in price from $20 to $20. The Lounge and Teppan menus offer lunch options that are affordable, with an average menu selection of $9-$15.
